Choosing the Right Pine Bunk Beds

Buying the right bunk bed for your kids require some careful considerations. With the numerous sizes, styles and designs to choose from, choosing the best one that suits your needs would take a lot of time unless you are prepared for the task. A pine bunk bed may be the economical answer to your space-saving problem. However, it is best to let the future-user (your kids) of the bunk bed to have their say before you make the final purchase. Here are some guides for your consideration.

What is the available space? Bunk beds are very ideal for a cramped bedroom. If there are two kids to share a fairly small bedroom, purchasing a bunk bed is a great idea to save space. However, bunk beds are not confined for small bedrooms only as large bedroom can also benefit from them. Measure the space allotted for the bunk bed.  You should measure the clearance from floor to ceiling. Since standard bunk beds have heights ranging from 5 ½ to 6 feet, allow an extra 2 feet above the top bunk to avoid accidental bumps for the user. The height requirement would not really be a problem as homes have a minimum floor to ceiling height of 8 feet.  Consider the room dimensions and the placement of other furniture in the bedroom too.

Who will use the bunk bed? Who will use the bunk bed and what are their ages? If your kids are below 6 years old, a standard twin double deck bed is not ideal for them.  If space would allow, an L-shaped bunk bed is recommended as its height is lower than a regular bunk bed. If the kids are older, you can opt for the standard twin over twin bunk bed. If only one child will use the bunk bed, consider a loft bed instead so your child can utilize the space below the bunk for a study area or for storage.  If the bunk bed is for occasional guests, include this factor when choosing the bunk bed.

If space is not an issue, there are very innovative and “playful” designs for your kids. There are bunk beds that have slides, tents, staircases, or  are theme-designed.

What type of bunk bed will fit the requirements? The aspects being considered here are the sizes,  types of bunk beds and its usage.  If what you need is a straightforward bunk bed to fit two kids in one room, then your best choice is a twin over twin bunk bed.  If it is an L-shape bunk bed that you prefer, make sure the bunk bed will fit the allotted space in the bedroom.  If your hunt for a bunk bed is geared towards a loft bed for your teenage son, see that space below the loft bed is high enough to accommodate a computer or study desk and for its user.   If the bunk bed is for an only child and an occasional  friend (for sleepovers), you might want to consider a bunk bed with a loft over a futon. The futon can double-up as a couch when not in use. You might also consider a pine bunk bed in the pull-out style. You can simply pull-out  the extra bed when needed.

What material do you prefer? Bunk beds can be of wood, metal and combination of both. Wood and metal are both sturdy materials for bunk beds. Pine bunk beds are very popular as they are durable and will fit most bedroom décor.  If you choose wood, you have the option for a natural wood finish, wood stain or paint of your choice. You have the option to paint metal bunk beds too.

Other aspects that you should consider are the styles and the type of ladder used for the top bunk. For styles, you can choose from contemporary, traditional, Colonial, cottage or rustic and more. For the ladder, there is the built-in or removable ladder. There are bunk beds integrated with a mini-staircase which is more suitable for young kids.

Before you purchase the bunk bed, inspect the construction joints of the bunk bed. Try it for size and see that it is steady and not wobbly.  Make sure that you buy from a reputable manufacturer and that the bunk bed has warranty.
